Description
Overview of the medicine
Brezofil 100 mg Syrup is an anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator medicine used to treat respiratory conditions like chronic bronchitis and asthma. It helps in reducing inflammation and relaxing the muscles around the airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
100 mg (as per prescribed volume of syrup) twice daily, or as directed by the physician. Maximum dose generally 300 mg/day.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required based on renal function; generally, start with lower doses.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary. Not recommended in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally. Can be taken with or without food. Measure the dose accurately using a measuring cup or spoon provided.
Mechanism of Action
Fenspiride acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and a bronchodilator. Its mechanism involves antagonism of H1 histamine receptors, inhibition of alpha1-adrenergic receptors, and modulation of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes, reducing bronchoconstriction and inflammation in the airways.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects may be observed within a few days of regular administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via the kidneys (urine), with some fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 12 hours (elimination half-life).
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, with peak plasma concentrations achieved within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized, primarily in the liver, into inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fenspiride or any component of the syrup
- History of cardiac arrhythmias or risk factors for QT prolongation
- Children under 2 years (due to respiratory depression risk)
Drug Interactions
CNS depressants
May enhance the sedative effects when used with alcohol or other CNS depressants.
QT-prolonging drugs
Concurrent use with other drugs known to prolong the QT interval (e.g., antiarrhythmics, some antipsychotics, macrolide antibiotics) may increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, and potentially cardiac arrhythmias. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and monitoring of cardiac function (ECG).
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation due to insufficient data on safety. Consult a doctor.
