Description
Overview of the medicine
Broket 1 mg/ml Syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to thin and loosen mucus in the airways. It helps to clear respiratory passages and relieve productive cough associated with various acute and chronic respiratory diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
15 ml (equivalent to 15 mg ambroxol) three times daily. (Note: Standard adult dose is 30mg 2-3 times daily, this strength implies higher volume intake)
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required for elderly patients, follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment, the dose may need to be reduced or the interval between doses extended. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol works by increasing the synthesis and secretion of serous mucus in the respiratory tract. It also stimulates ciliary activity, leading to enhanced mucociliary clearance. Additionally, it depolymerizes mucopolysaccharides and increases the synthesis of lung surfactant, which helps reduce mucus viscosity and makes it easier to expectorate.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes
Excretion
Mainly renal, with about 90% eliminated as metabolites and 10% as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours
Absorption
Ambroxol is rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2.5 hours. Bioavailability is about 70-80% due to first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, forming inactive metabolites, mainly by glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any other component of the syrup.
- •History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome) to ambroxol.
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics
Ambroxol has been shown to increase the penetration of some antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline) into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Antitussives
Concomitant use with antitussives (cough suppressants) is not recommended as it may lead to a dangerous accumulation of bronchial secretions due to reduced cough reflex.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Management is symptomatic and supportive; there is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use with caution during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks. Ambroxol is excreted into breast milk; use with caution during lactation.
