Description
Overview of the medicine
Broncotrol 2 mg Syrup contains Salbutamol, a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist used for the relief of bronchospasm in conditions like asthma and COPD.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: 2-4 mg (10-20 ml) three to four times daily. Maximum 8 mg (40 ml) per dose.
Elderly
Elderly patients may require lower initial doses. Monitor for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised in severe impairment.
How to Take
Broncotrol Syrup is for oral administration. It can be taken with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscle, bronchodilation, and increased airflow.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes (oral syrup).
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as unchanged drug and its metabolite.
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours (oral).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation.
- •Contraindicated in patients with acute severe asthma who require immediate medical attention.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May increase digoxin levels; monitor digoxin levels.
Diuretics
Increased risk of hypokalemia.
MAOIs and TCAs
May potentiate the cardiovascular effects of salbutamol. Use with caution.
Beta-blockers (non-selective)
May antagonize the effects of salbutamol, leading to bronchospasm. Avoid concomitant use.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tremor, palpitations, tachycardia, headache, dizziness, and hyperglycemia. Hypokalemia can also occur. Treatment is supportive; consider beta-selective adrenergic blocking agents in severe cases, but use with caution to avoid bronchospasm.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts may be excreted in breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
