Description
Overview of the medicine
Broncotrol 4 mg Tablet contains Salbutamol, a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist used to provide rapid relief from bronchospasm in conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 2-4 mg three to four times daily. Maximum 8 mg four times daily.
Elderly
Lower doses may be required, e.g., 2 mg three to four times daily.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for mild to moderate renal impairment; monitor response. For severe impairment, consider reducing dose.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the muscle and bronchodilation. It also inhibits the release of mast cell mediators.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 30 minutes (oral tablet).
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as unchanged drug and its metabolite.
Half life
4-6 hours (oral tablet).
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation
- •Threatened abortion during the first or second trimester of pregnancy
Drug Interactions
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
May exacerbate hypokalemia when co-administered with high doses of salbutamol.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
Can antagonize the effects of salbutamol, leading to bronchospasm. Avoid concomitant use.
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Can potentiate the cardiovascular effects of salbutamol. Use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremors, palpitations, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, and metabolic acidosis. Treatment is primarily symptomatic and supportive; consider cardioselective beta-blockers for severe cardiac effects, but with extreme caution.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution during lactation.
