Description
Overview of the medicine
Brox (Ambroxol) is a mucolytic agent used to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. It is prescribed for various respiratory conditions involving excessive or viscous mucus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically, 30 mg 2-3 times daily (tablet) or 10 ml (30 mg) syrup 2-3 times daily.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, no specific adjustment required unless severe hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction may be necessary in severe renal impairment; consult a physician.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids to help thin mucus.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol acts by stimulating serous cells, increasing the production of a less viscous mucus. It also activates lysosomal enzymes, which break down acidic mucopolysaccharides, thereby reducing the viscosity of the sputum and promoting mucociliary clearance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes of oral administration.
Excretion
Mainly via the kidneys, with about 90% eliminated in the urine.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Primarily in the liver to various inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any component of the formulation.
- Rare hereditary conditions of fructose intolerance (for syrup formulations containing sorbitol).
Drug Interactions
0
Antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin): Ambroxol may increase the penetration of these antibiotics into bronchial secretions.
1
Antitussives (e.g., Codeine, Dextromethorphan): Concomitant use with antitussives may lead to a dangerous accumulation of secretions due to the cough reflex suppression.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include gastrointestinal disturbances. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, only if clearly necessary and after consulting a doctor. Ambroxol is excreted in breast milk; therefore, it is not recommended during lactation.
