Description
Overview of the medicine
Buterol 5 mg Oral Solution contains Salbutamol sulfate, a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist. It is used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath, by relaxing the muscles of the airways.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For relief of bronchospasm: 2 to 4 mg (2 to 4 mL of Buterol 5 mg Oral Solution) three or four times daily. Maximum single dose 5 mg (5 mL). Not to exceed 20 mg (20 mL) in 24 hours.
Elderly
Lower initial doses may be considered. Generally, adult dosage applies, but monitor for adverse effects. For relief of bronchospasm: 2 to 4 mg (2 to 4 mL of Buterol 5 mg Oral Solution) three or four times daily. Maximum single dose 5 mg (5 mL). Not to exceed 20 mg (20 mL) in 24 hours.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally. The dose can be measured using a measuring spoon or cup. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the muscle and bronchodilation. It also inhibits the release of mediators from mast cells in the airways, contributing to its anti-inflammatory effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bronchodilation starts within 5-15 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine as metabolites and unchanged drug.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes extensive metabolism in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Salbutamol or any component of the formulation
- Tachyarrhythmias
- Severe obstructive cardiomyopathy
Drug Interactions
MAOIs and TCAs
May potentiate the vascular effects of Salbutamol, leading to increased risk of cardiovascular adverse effects.
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
May exacerbate hypokalemia when co-administered with high doses of beta-agonists.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
May diminish the bronchodilator effect of Salbutamol and may cause severe bronchospasm.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremors, palpitations, headache, and hypokalemia. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic; consider beta-selective cardioselective blocking agents in severe cases, but with caution due to the risk of bronchospasm.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Salbutamol is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised when administered to a nursing woman.
