Description
Overview of the medicine
Calcizen is a calcium supplement used to prevent or treat low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia) in people who do not get enough calcium from their diet. It is essential for strong bones, muscles, nervous system, and heart health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 500 mg to 1000 mg of elemental calcium daily, usually divided into 1-2 doses. Consult a doctor for specific dosage.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but may require closer monitoring due to potential renal impairment or concomitant medications. Usually 1000 mg to 1200 mg elemental calcium daily.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor calcium levels closely. Dosage adjustment may be necessary. Not recommended in severe impairment due to risk of hypercalcemia.
How to Take
Take Calcizen with food, preferably after a meal, to enhance absorption. If it's a chewable tablet, chew thoroughly before swallowing. Drink a full glass of water with each dose.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium carbonate provides elemental calcium, which is crucial for numerous physiological processes including bone formation, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and blood coagulation. It neutralizes stomach acid, allowing for better absorption in the small intestine.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action for systemic effect is gradual, with calcium levels rising within hours after administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via kidneys (urine) and intestines (feces).
Half life
The half-life of calcium in blood is complex due to its constant turnover and storage in bones; effective half-life for elimination from blood is approximately 20-24 hours.
Absorption
About 20-30% of elemental calcium is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the duodenum and proximal jejunum, with efficiency decreasing at higher doses.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized in the traditional sense; it is an elemental ion.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels)
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis) history or active stones
- •Hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can interfere with their absorption; take calcium at least 30 minutes (or as advised) after bisphosphonates.
Iron Supplements
Calcium may decrease iron absorption; take them at different times of the day.
Thiazide Diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Cardiac Glycosides (e.g., Digoxin)
Increased risk of arrhythmias in patients with hypercalcemia.
Thyroid Hormones (e.g., Levothyroxine)
Calcium can reduce absorption; separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Tetracycline and Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics
Calcium can bind to these antibiotics, reducing their absorption and effectiveness; separate administration by at least 2-6 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, constipation, confusion, muscle weakness, excessive thirst, increased urination, kidney stones). Treatment involves discontinuing calcium intake, hydration, and medical management to lower blood calcium levels. In severe cases, intravenous fluids and diuretics may be necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Calcium requirements increase during pregnancy and lactation. Calcizen can be used safely during these periods under medical supervision to meet increased demands. Do not exceed recommended doses.
