Description
Overview of the medicine
Calson is a combination of Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3, used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, primarily for maintaining bone health. It supports strong bones and teeth, and is essential for various bodily functions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution with renal function. 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor serum calcium and phosphate levels. Dosage adjustment may be necessary under medical supervision.
How to Take
Tablets can be taken with or without food. Chewable tablets should be chewed before swallowing. For better absorption, it is often recommended to take calcium with meals.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Carbonate provides elemental calcium, which is crucial for bone formation, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and blood clotting. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) helps the body absorb calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the body, which are vital for bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual; effects on bone density are observed over weeks to months.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via feces, with some renal excretion. Vitamin D metabolites are primarily excreted in bile and feces, with minor renal excretion.
Half life
Calcium: Approximately 20-25 hours in bone. Vitamin D3: The active metabolite (calcitriol) has a half-life of 3-6 hours, while cholecalciferol itself can be stored in fat and released over weeks.
Absorption
Calcium absorption varies but is enhanced by Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is absorbed from the small intestine, primarily in the jejunum, and requires bile salts.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized. Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to the active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- •Severe hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in urine)
- •Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
- •Hyperparathyroidism
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can reduce absorption. Take calcium at least 30 minutes to 2 hours after bisphosphonates.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Take calcium at least 2-4 hours apart.
Cardiac Glycosides (e.g., Digoxin)
Hypercalcemia can increase the risk of digoxin toxicity.
Thyroid hormones (e.g., Levothyroxine)
Calcium can interfere with absorption. Take at least 4 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (hypercalcemia) may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, thirst, polyuria, muscle weakness, confusion, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias. Treatment involves discontinuing Calson, hydration, and medical management to lower calcium levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Calson is generally considered safe and important during pregnancy and lactation within recommended doses. Calcium and Vitamin D are essential for fetal bone development and are secreted into breast milk. However, it should be used under medical advice.
