Captabine 500 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg orally every 12 hours for 7-14 days, depending on the severity and type of infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required unless there is significant renal impairment. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, the dose should be reduced to 250 mg every 12 hours or adjusted by a physician.
How to Take
Captabine tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Taking it with food may help minimize gastrointestinal upset.

Excretion
Excreted predominantly by the kidneys, with a smaller portion excreted via bile.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 6-8 hours.

Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.

Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Captabine, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillin).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring INR monitoring and potential dose adjustment.
Probenecid
Concurrent administration with probenecid may increase and prolong plasma concentrations of Captabine by decreasing its renal tubular secretion.
Oral Contraceptives
Efficacy of oral contraceptives may be reduced; advise additional contraceptive methods.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion is recent. Hemodialysis may be useful in accelerating removal from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
