Description
Overview of the medicine
Carticel Plus is a combination supplement containing Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin Sulfate, and Hyaluronic Acid, formulated to support joint health, reduce joint pain, and improve mobility in individuals suffering from osteoarthritis or general joint discomfort.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One capsule orally, once or twice daily, preferably with meals, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment; consult a physician.
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably with a meal to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the capsule whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Glucosamine sulfate helps in the synthesis of cartilage and inhibits its degradation. Chondroitin sulfate acts as a building block for cartilage and helps in water retention, providing elasticity and shock absorption. Hyaluronic acid is a key component of synovial fluid, providing lubrication and reducing friction in the joints.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief usually observed after several weeks to months of continuous use.
Excretion
Mainly via kidneys, with some fecal excretion.
Half life
Glucosamine: approx. 15 hours; Chondroitin: approx. 5-7 hours. Hyaluronic acid has a short systemic half-life (minutes) but local effects persist.
Absorption
Glucosamine and Chondroitin have variable oral bioavailability (10-25%). Hyaluronic acid is absorbed but its direct incorporation into synovial fluid via oral route is debated.
Metabolism
Glucosamine is primarily metabolized in the liver. Chondroitin is depolymerized by lysosomal enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component
- •Allergy to shellfish (as glucosamine is often derived from shellfish)
- •Children and adolescents under 18 years
Drug Interactions
Antidiabetic agents
Rarely, glucosamine may affect blood glucose levels; monitor blood sugar.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase the anticoagulant effect and risk of bleeding. Monitor INR closely.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely to cause serious adverse effects, but may lead to gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to insufficient data on safety. Consult a physician before use.
