Description
Overview of the medicine
Cedril 125 mg Suspension contains Cefadroxil, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including those of the urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, and throat.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults typically take 500 mg to 1 gram twice daily, depending on the infection. (For suspension, consult a physician for precise dosage).
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for the elderly, but renal function should be monitored.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be adjusted based on creatinine clearance; an initial dose of 500 mg, followed by maintenance doses at extended intervals (e.g., every 12-36 hours).
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Administer orally, with or without food. Taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.
Mechanism of Action
Cefadroxil is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located in the bacterial cell wall, thereby interfering with the transpeptidation reaction necessary for peptidoglycan synthesis. This leads to the disruption of the cell wall and ultimately bacterial cell lysis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are usually reached within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. About 90% is eliminated within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in individuals with normal renal function, increasing significantly with renal impairment.
Absorption
Rapidly and nearly completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food.
Metabolism
Cefadroxil is minimally metabolized in the body; the majority is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefadroxil, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May decrease renal tubular secretion of cefadroxil, resulting in increased and prolonged plasma concentrations of cefadroxil.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect by altering gut flora and reducing vitamin K synthesis. INR monitoring is recommended.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard any unused portion after the specified period (e.g., 7-14 days).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and epigastric distress. In the event of an overdose, gastric lavage may be considered. Treatment is primarily supportive; hemodialysis may be useful in cases of severe overdose with renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefadroxil is excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in nursing mothers.
