Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefida 300 mg Capsule contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dosage is 400 mg daily given as a single dose or in two divided doses of 200 mg every 12 hours. For 300 mg capsule, it's typically 300 mg once daily or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients with normal renal function. For elderly patients with renal impairment, dosage adjustment is necessary.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min, dosage should be 75% of the standard dose. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min, dosage should be 50% of the standard dose.
How to Take
Cefida 300 mg Capsule is taken orally, with or without food. It is recommended to take the medicine at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby interfering with the peptidoglycan synthesis that is crucial for cell wall integrity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved 2-6 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 50%) and bile (about 10%).
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3 to 4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food may delay absorption but does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Cefixime is not extensively metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Patients with known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or to any of the excipients of this product.
- •Patients with a history of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma concentrations and prolong its half-life by inhibiting renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Elevated carbamazepine levels have been reported with concomitant cefixime administration.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May increase prothrombin time (PT) with or without clinical bleeding. Monitor PT/INR regularly.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. There is no specific antidote for cefixime. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis does not remove significant quantities of cefixime from the body. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in low concentrations in human breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
