Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefteria 400 mg Capsule is an oral antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin class, primarily used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required in elderly patients with normal renal function. For elderly patients with renal impairment, dosage should be adjusted as for other renal impairment patients.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min, the dose should be reduced to 200 mg once daily. For hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis patients, the dose should be 200 mg once daily.
How to Take
Cefteria 400 mg Capsule should be taken orally with a glass of water, with or without food. It is generally recommended to take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent drug levels. Complete the full course of medication even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime, the active ingredient, works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan units, crucial for cell wall integrity. This leads to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 2-6 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 50-60% of absorbed dose) and also via biliary excretion.
Half life
Plasma half-life is typically 3-4 hours, but can be prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; approximately 10% of the drug is converted to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics
- •Known hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics (due to potential cross-reactivity)
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
May increase cefixime plasma concentrations.
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma concentrations by inhibiting renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant administration may increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May increase the anticoagulant effect and risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of INR/PT is recommended.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. There is no specific antidote. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis does not remove cefixime from the body in significant quantities. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
