Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefixime is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in 90mg suspension. Adult dosage for cefixime usually 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours (tablet/capsule form).
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment needed for creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Shake well before use. Measure with an oral dosing syringe/spoon.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies by infection.
Excretion
Primarily renal (approximately 50% excreted unchanged in urine).
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, approximately 40-50%. Food may delay but not significantly reduce absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; about 10% may be metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity to any penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May reduce cefixime absorption (though generally not clinically significant).
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time/INR, leading to increased bleeding risk.
Carbamazepine
May increase carbamazepine levels.
Storage
Store dry powder at room temperature (20-25°C). After reconstitution, store at room temperature or refrigerate (2-8°C) as per manufacturer's instructions. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated if there is an acute overdose. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis do not remove cefixime in significant quantities. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B: Animal reproduction studies have not demonstrated a fetal risk but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Lactation: Excreted in small amounts into breast milk. Use with caution during breastfeeding; monitor infant for diarrhea, candidiasis.
