Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceftid DS contains Ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is administered parenterally.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 g intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM) once daily or in two divided doses. Up to 4 g/day in severe cases.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment generally required unless severe renal/hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 10 mL/min).
How to Take
For intramuscular injection, reconstitute with lidocaine. For intravenous injection/infusion, reconstitute with water for injection or compatible IV fluids and administer slowly.
Mechanism of Action
Ceftriaxone inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid after IV administration, within minutes.
Excretion
Approximately 33-67% excreted unchanged in urine, remaining in bile and feces.
Half life
Approximately 6-9 hours (prolonged in neonates and patients with renal/hepatic impairment).
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after intramuscular (IM) administration, bioavailability is 100%. Intravenous (IV) administration provides immediate and complete bioavailability.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
