Description
Overview of the medicine
Celozin 10 mg Tablet contains Levocetirizine, an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as hay fever, perennial allergic rhinitis, and chronic urticaria. It works by blocking histamine, a natural substance that the body produces during an allergic reaction.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily, preferably in the evening. Some patients may respond to 5 mg once daily.
Elderly
Adjustment may be needed in elderly patients with impaired renal function. Consult a doctor.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 30-49 mL/min: 5 mg every other day; For CrCl <30 mL/min: 5 mg twice weekly. Contraindicated in end-stage renal disease (CrCl <10 mL/min).
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with or without food. It is recommended to take it in the evening to mitigate potential drowsiness.
Mechanism of Action
Levocetirizine is a potent and selective antagonist of peripheral H1-receptors. It blocks the effects of histamine, reducing symptoms like itching, sneezing, watery eyes, and runny nose associated with allergic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 15-30 minutes
Excretion
Primarily via urine (approximately 85% of the dose) and feces (approximately 13% of the dose).
Half life
Approximately 7-10 hours
Absorption
Rapidly and extensively absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver (less than 14% of the dose), primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine or any component of the formulation
- End-stage renal disease (CrCl <10 mL/min)
- Patients undergoing hemodialysis
- Children less than 6 years of age
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
May increase levocetirizine exposure, though clinical significance is usually minimal.
Theophylline
Small decrease in levocetirizine clearance observed, but clinical significance unknown. No dose adjustment is typically required.
Alcohol and CNS depressants
May increase CNS depression and impair alertness; concomitant use should be avoided.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness in adults and agitation/restlessness followed by drowsiness in children. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed after consulting a doctor. Levocetirizine is excreted in breast milk, so caution advised during lactation; a doctor's advice should be sought.
