Overview of the medicine
Cefixime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, otitis media, and uncomplicated gonorrhea.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults (usually with tablets, but suspension for those unable to swallow): 200-400 mg once or twice daily depending on infection severity. For suspension, this translates to 10-20 mL of 100 mg/5 mL suspension.
Elderly
Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is required for patients with creatinine clearance less than 60 mL/min.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Onset
1-2 hours (onset of antibacterial activity)
Excretion
Approximately 50% of the absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in the urine over 24 hours. Some biliary excretion occurs.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 30-50% absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 2-6 hours.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or penicillins.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma concentrations and prolong its half-life.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (INR), requiring closer monitoring and dose adjustment.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discarded after the recommended period.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage and symptomatic and supportive treatment are recommended. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
