Description
Overview of the medicine
Cephracap DS contains Cephradine, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usual adult dose is 500 mg every 6 to 12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection. For severe infections, dosage may be increased up to 1 gram every 6 hours.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients, particularly those with reduced renal function. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be reduced in patients with significant renal impairment. Consult a doctor for specific guidelines based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Cephracap DS capsules can be taken orally with or without food. To minimize gastrointestinal upset, it may be taken with food or milk.
Mechanism of Action
Cephradine inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects typically observed within hours of first dose.
Excretion
Primarily via the kidneys through glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. About 80-95% of the dose is excreted unchanged in urine within 6 hours.
Half life
Approximately 0.7 to 1.5 hours; prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (about 90%). Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cephradine, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Decreases renal tubular secretion of cephalosporins, leading to increased and prolonged plasma concentrations of Cephradine.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity, especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment.
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect, requiring close monitoring of INR.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rarely, convulsions. Management includes gastric lavage or emesis, supportive care, and monitoring of vital signs. Hemodialysis may be useful in severe cases of renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cephradine is excreted in low concentrations in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.

Lab Monitoring
- Regular monitoring of renal function is recommended during prolonged therapy or in patients with pre-existing renal impairment. Complete blood count (CBC) may be monitored periodically.
Doctor Notes
- Consider culture and sensitivity tests before initiating therapy.
- Adjust dose in renal impairment.
- Monitor for signs of C. difficile-associated diarrhea.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Complete the full course of treatment, even if you feel better, to prevent recurrence and development of antibiotic resistance.
- Do not share your medicine with others.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
