Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceritec contains Cetirizine Hydrochloride, a potent second-generation antihistamine, used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria, and other allergic conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily.
Elderly
Usually 5 mg once daily; dosage adjustment may be necessary in case of renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Creatinine clearance 31-60 mL/min: 5 mg once daily. Creatinine clearance <31 mL/min or hemodialysis: 5 mg every other day.
How to Take
May be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and selective antagonist of peripheral H1-receptors. It inhibits the early phase of the allergic reaction mediated by histamine and also reduces the migration of inflammatory cells and the release of mediators associated with the late phase of allergic reaction.

Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine.
Half life
Approximately 8-10 hours in adults.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives.
- •Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min).
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
May decrease cetirizine clearance (though minor).
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
Increased risk of CNS depression.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, sedation (in adults) or agitation (in children). Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment. Gastric lavage may be considered if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised during breastfeeding.
