Description
Overview of the medicine
Cetriben 5 mg/5 ml Syrup contains Cetirizine, a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and hives. It works by blocking histamine, a natural substance that the body produces during an allergic reaction.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (10 mg) once daily, or 5 ml (5 mg) twice daily. Max 10 ml/day. For mild symptoms, 5 ml (5 mg) once daily may be sufficient. For children 6-12 years: 5 ml (5 mg) twice daily or 10 ml (10 mg) once daily. For children 2-6 years: 2.5 ml (2.5 mg) twice daily or 5 ml (5 mg) once daily. For children 6 months-2 years: 2.5 ml (2.5 mg) once daily.
Elderly
5 ml (5 mg) once daily. Dosage adjustment may be necessary for renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For moderate renal impairment (CrCl 31-50 ml/min), 5 ml (5 mg) once daily. For severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 ml/min), 5 ml (5 mg) every other day.
How to Take
Cetriben syrup should be taken orally, with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or oral syringe to ensure accurate dosing, especially for children.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and selective antagonist of peripheral H1-receptors. It blocks the binding of histamine to these receptors, thereby preventing the release of inflammatory mediators and reducing allergic symptoms like itching, sneezing, and vasodilation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 20 to 60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 70%) and about 10% in feces.
Half life
Approximately 8-11 hours (adults), 6 hours (children 6-12 years), 5 hours (children 2-6 years), 3.5 hours (children 6 months-2 years).
Absorption
Rapidly and extensively absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism; approximately 10% of the dose is metabolized.
