Description
Overview of the medicine
Cetril 10 mg tablet contains Cetirizine Hydrochloride, a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as hay fever, perennial allergic rhinitis, and chronic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily. Some patients may respond to 5 mg once daily.
Elderly
5 mg once daily. For elderly patients with impaired renal function, dosage adjustments are necessary.
Renal_impairment
For moderate to severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min), 5 mg once daily or 5 mg every other day is recommended. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Cetril tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, with or without food. It can be taken at any time of day, but consistency in timing is recommended.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and selective antagonist of peripheral H1-receptors. It inhibits the histamine-induced early phase of allergic reactions and also reduces the migration of inflammatory cells and the release of mediators associated with the late phase of allergic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 20 to 60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged via the kidneys (renal excretion).
Half life
Approximately 8 to 11 hours in adults.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism; about two-thirds of the dose is excreted unchanged in the urine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives
- •Patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min)
Drug Interactions
Theophylline (low dose)
Although a pharmacokinetic interaction with theophylline 400 mg once daily was found, it is unlikely to be clinically significant.
CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
Concomitant administration may lead to additive central nervous system depression, potentially increasing drowsiness.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, agitation, restlessness, and rarely, tachycardia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cetirizine is excreted in human breast milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
