Description
Overview of the medicine
Cikolin 500 mg Injection contains Citicoline, a neuroprotective compound that helps to protect brain cells, improve brain function, and aid in recovery from neurological conditions. It is used in conditions like stroke, head injury, Parkinson's disease, and cognitive impairment.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 500-1000 mg IM or IV once or twice daily. In acute ischemic stroke, 1000 mg IV/IM twice daily for 6 weeks. Dosage and duration depend on the condition and physician's discretion.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, but caution is advised in patients with pre-existing conditions. Similar to adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for patients with renal impairment, as excretion is primarily respiratory and hepatic. However, caution is advised.
How to Take
Cikolin injection can be administered intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV). For IV administration, it should be given as a slow intravenous injection (3-5 minutes) or as an intravenous drip (40-60 drops per minute).
Mechanism of Action
Citicoline works by increasing the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a major component of neuronal membranes. It also enhances the production of several neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, norepinephrine, and dopamine, which are crucial for brain function. This action helps to repair damaged brain cells, improve cerebral blood flow, and enhance cognitive functions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects can be observed relatively quickly after intravenous administration, within minutes to hours.
Excretion
Excretion occurs mainly via respiration as carbon dioxide (CO2) and via urine. A small portion is excreted in feces.
Half life
The half-life of Citicoline itself is short, but its active metabolites (choline and cytidine) have varying half-lives, often around several hours to days for complete elimination.
Absorption
Following parenteral administration (IM/IV), Citicoline is rapidly absorbed and distributed throughout the body. It crosses the blood-brain barrier.
Metabolism
Citicoline is metabolized to choline and cytidine in the gut and liver, which are then utilized in various metabolic pathways, including phospholipid synthesis and nucleic acid metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Citicoline or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with hypertonia of the parasympathetic nervous system (increased vagal tone).
Drug Interactions
L-Dopa
Citicoline may potentiate the effects of L-Dopa (levodopa).

Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Citicoline has low toxicity. In case of overdose, supportive and symptomatic treatment should be given.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown adverse effects, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. It is not known whether Citicoline is excreted in human milk; use with caution during lactation.
