Overview of the medicine
Cikolin 500 mg tablet contains Citicoline, a psychostimulant and nootropic. It is used in conditions of cerebral insufficiency, stroke, head injury, and cognitive disorders to improve brain function and support nerve cell health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg to 2000 mg daily, usually in divided doses. For acute stroke, 1000 mg to 2000 mg daily for 6 weeks. For cognitive disorders, 500-1000 mg daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally required, but caution should be exercised.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment recommended for mild to moderate renal impairment.
How to Take
May be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Citicoline acts by enhancing the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, the primary component of neuronal membranes. It also increases levels of several neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, norepinephrine, and dopamine, and reduces neuronal damage during ischemia.

Excretion
Primarily excreted as carbon dioxide via respiration (CO2) and urine (choline and cytidine components).
Half life
Biphasic elimination, with a primary half-life of 1.5-3 hours and a secondary half-life of 20-30 hours.

Well absorbed orally, bioavailability is approximately 90%.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the gut wall and liver to choline and cytidine.

Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Levodopa
Citicoline may potentiate the effects of levodopa.
Meclofenoxate
Co-administration with meclofenoxate should be avoided.
Storage

Overdose
No specific antidote is known. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Citicoline has a low toxicity profile.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Exercise caution during lactation, as it is unknown if Citicoline is excreted in breast milk.
