Description
Overview of the medicine
Cipron 250 mg Suspension contains Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical adult oral dosage ranges from 250 mg to 750 mg twice daily, depending on the infection severity and site.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but dose adjustment may be necessary in case of renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl < 30 mL/min, administer half the usual dose.
How to Take
Shake the suspension well before each use. Administer orally, usually with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices alone.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (approximately 50-70% as unchanged drug) and to a lesser extent via the feces (15%).
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed after oral administration. Bioavailability is approximately 70-80%.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to four active metabolites (desethyleneciprofloxacin, sulfociprofloxacin, oxociprofloxacin, and formylciprofloxacin).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
- Concomitant administration with Tizanidine
- Children and adolescents (due to risk of arthropathy, unless benefits outweigh risks)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Potentiation of anticoagulant effect, increased risk of bleeding.
Tizanidine
Increased plasma concentrations of Tizanidine, leading to hypotension and somnolence.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of theophylline, leading to toxicity.
Antacids/Mineral supplements (containing Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, Zn)
Decreased absorption of ciprofloxacin. Administer ciprofloxacin 2 hours before or 6 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of acute oral overdose, gastric emptying by induced emesis or gastric lavage may be considered. Support measures such as ensuring adequate hydration and maintaining renal function should be instituted. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis remove only small amounts of ciprofloxacin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted into breast milk. Nursing mothers should discontinue nursing or the drug, considering the importance of the drug to the mother.
