Description
Overview of the medicine
Cirizin 10 mg tablet contains Cetirizine, a potent second-generation antihistamine, used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria, and other allergic conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily, or 5 mg twice daily.
Elderly
5 mg once daily, or 10 mg once daily if renal function is normal. Dose adjustment may be necessary.
Renal_impairment
Moderate to severe impairment: 5 mg once daily. End-stage renal disease (creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min): Not recommended.
How to Take
Cirizin 10 mg tablet is taken orally, with or without food. It can be taken at any time of day, but typically once daily.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine selectively inhibits peripheral H1 receptors, preventing histamine from binding and thus reducing allergic symptoms like itching, sneezing, and watery eyes. It has minimal sedative effects due to its inability to readily cross the blood-brain barrier.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 20-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted mainly unchanged in the urine (about 70%) and feces (about 10%).
Half life
Approximately 8-11 hours in adults.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives.
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min).
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
May increase cetirizine levels and potentiate side effects.
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
Increased risk of drowsiness and CNS depression.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, tachycardia, tremor, headache, and urinary retention. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Cetirizine is excreted in human breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
