Description
Overview of the medicine
Cirizin 5 mg syrup contains Cetirizine, an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy watery eyes, and itchy throat. It is often prescribed for children due to its syrup formulation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and adolescents 12 years and older: 10 mg (10 ml syrup) once daily or 5 mg (5 ml syrup) twice daily.
Elderly
For elderly patients with normal renal function, no dosage adjustment is necessary. For those with renal impairment, dosage should be adjusted as per renal impairment guidelines.
Renal_impairment
Moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance 31-60 ml/min): 5 mg (5 ml syrup) once daily. Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 31 ml/min): 5 mg (5 ml syrup) every other day. End-stage renal disease: Contraindicated.
How to Take
Cirizin syrup should be taken orally. It can be taken with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or oral syringe for accurate dosing, especially for children.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent, selective, peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It inhibits the histamine-induced early phase of allergic reaction and also reduces the migration of inflammatory cells and the release of mediators associated with the late phase allergic reaction.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 20-60 minutes
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (approximately 60% within 24 hours).
Half life
Approximately 8-12 hours in adults, shorter in children.
Absorption
Rapidly and extensively absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Approximately 10-16% of an oral dose is metabolized in the liver to an inactive metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivative.
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 10 ml/min).
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
May increase cetirizine exposure.
CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
May increase CNS depression.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, tachycardia, tremor, headache, confusion, malaise, mydriasis, pruritus, restlessness, somnolence, stupor, or urinary retention. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; there is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Cetirizine is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
