Description
Overview of the medicine
Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies such as watery eyes, runny nose, itching eyes/nose, sneezing, and hives. It works by blocking histamine, a natural substance that the body produces during an allergic reaction.

10 mg once daily, or 5 mg twice daily.
Elderly
Usually 5 mg once daily, adjust based on renal function.

How to Take
Oral administration, with or without food. Can be taken in the morning or evening.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and selective antagonist of peripheral H1-receptors. It binds to H1-receptors, preventing histamine from binding and exerting its effects, thereby reducing allergic symptoms. Unlike first-generation antihistamines, it causes less sedation due to its poor ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.
