Description
Overview of the medicine
Climed 150 mg Capsule contains Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain gram-positive aerobic bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
150-300 mg every 6 hours, or 300-450 mg every 6 hours for more severe infections. Max 1.8 g/day.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment typically required based on age alone, but monitor renal/hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment needed for mild-moderate impairment. For severe impairment, consider reducing dose or increasing interval after initial loading dose.
How to Take
Oral administration. Take capsules with a full glass of water to prevent esophageal irritation. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby interfering with the initiation of peptide chains.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic levels usually achieved within 30 minutes to 1 hour after oral administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via the bile and urine; about 10-20% as active drug and metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 2-3 hours (may be prolonged in renal or hepatic impairment).
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (about 90% bioavailability).
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to active and inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin
- History of antibiotic-associated colitis
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance anticoagulant effects; monitor INR.
Erythromycin
Antagonistic effect (avoid concomitant use).
Kaolin-pectin antidiarrheals
May decrease clindamycin absorption (take clindamycin at least 2 hours before).
Neuromuscular blocking agents
May enhance the neuromuscular blocking action.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
No specific antidote. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are not effective in removing clindamycin from blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; use with caution during lactation. Monitor breastfed infants for diarrhea, candidiasis, or hypersensitivity.
