Description
Overview of the medicine
Climed 300 mg Capsule contains Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic used to treat a variety of serious bacterial infections, including those of the skin, respiratory tract, bone, and intra-abdominal areas. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
150-450 mg orally every 6-8 hours, depending on the severity of the infection. For moderate to severe infections, typically 300 mg every 6-8 hours.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is usually needed based on age alone, but monitor renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. For severe impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min) or end-stage renal disease, consider reducing dosage frequency.
How to Take
Take Climed capsules orally with a full glass of water. To prevent esophageal irritation, it is important to swallow the capsule whole and not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Clindamycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. This action is primarily bacteriostatic.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antibacterial effects generally begin within hours.
Excretion
Excreted primarily through urine (10%) and feces (4%).
Half life
Approximately 2.4-3 hours in adults with normal renal and hepatic function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (approximately 90% oral bioavailability). Peak serum concentrations are achieved within 45-60 minutes.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, extensively metabolized to active (N-demethyl clindamycin) and inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of antibiotic-associated colitis.
- •Infants younger than 1 month due to benzyl alcohol in some formulations.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin
May antagonize the antibacterial effect of clindamycin due to competitive binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit.
Oral Typhoid vaccine
Clindamycin may reduce the therapeutic effect of live bacterial vaccines.
Neuromuscular blocking agents
Clindamycin has neuromuscular blocking properties, which may enhance the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents.
Warfarin and other Vitamin K antagonists
Increased risk of bleeding due to potential enhancement of anticoagulant effect. Monitor INR frequently.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive care is recommended. There is no specific antidote. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are not effective in removing clindamycin from the blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Clindamycin is excreted in human breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers and monitor infants for adverse gastrointestinal effects.
