Description
Overview of the medicine
CoralMax-D is a combination medication containing Calcium Carbonate and Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3). It is primarily used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, and for conditions like osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and rickets.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; caution may be needed in those with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor serum calcium and phosphate levels; dose adjustment may be necessary due to altered vitamin D metabolism.
How to Take
To be taken orally, preferably with or after food to enhance absorption and reduce gastric upset.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Carbonate provides elemental calcium, essential for bone health, nerve function, and muscle contraction. Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) enhances the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the gastrointestinal tract and regulates their metabolism, thus promoting bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual; beneficial effects on bone density become apparent after several weeks or months of consistent use.
Excretion
Calcium is excreted via urine and feces. Cholecalciferol and its metabolites are primarily excreted in the bile and feces, with a small amount in urine.
Half life
The half-life of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol), the major circulating form, is approximately 15-20 days. The half-life of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), the active form, is about 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Calcium absorption varies and is enhanced by Vitamin D. Cholecalciferol is fat-soluble and readily absorbed from the small intestine.
Metabolism
Cholecalciferol is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, then further hydroxylated in the kidneys to the active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. Calcium is not metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels)
- Hypercalciuria (high urine calcium levels)
- Severe renal impairment
- Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis)
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can interfere with absorption. Administer at least 30-60 minutes apart.
Corticosteroids
May decrease calcium absorption.
Cardiac glycosides
Hypercalcemia can potentiate the effects of cardiac glycosides, increasing risk of arrhythmias.
Thiazide diuretics
May decrease urinary calcium excretion, increasing risk of hypercalcemia.
Tetracycline and Fluoroquinolone antibiotics
May form insoluble complexes with calcium, reducing absorption of both. Administer at least 2-3 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, polyuria, polydipsia, confusion). Management involves discontinuing the supplement, hydration, and medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased calcium and vitamin D requirements. However, doses should not exceed the recommended daily allowance without medical advice.

Clinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials support the efficacy of calcium and vitamin D supplementation in preventing and treating bone-related disorders. Specific trials for CoralMax-D ensure bioequivalence and safety.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum calcium levels
- Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels
- Renal function (creatinine)
- Urinary calcium excretion (if hypercalciuria suspected)
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on lifestyle modifications including diet and exercise.
- Monitor serum calcium and vitamin D levels periodically in at-risk patients (e.g., renal impairment, long-term use).
- Counsel on potential drug interactions.
Patient Guidelines
- Take exactly as prescribed or directed.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
CoralMax-D is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D.
- Engage in regular weight-bearing exercise for bone health.
