Description
Overview of the medicine
Cozid 500 mg Injection contains Ceftazidime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including severe hospital-acquired infections, septicemia, meningitis, and infections in immunocompromised patients.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 g IV/IM every 8-12 hours, depending on infection severity and susceptibility. Max 6 g/day.
Elderly
Reduced dosage may be necessary, based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. e.g., CrCl 31-50 mL/min: 1 g every 12 hours; CrCl 16-30 mL/min: 1 g every 24 hours.
How to Take
For intravenous or intramuscular use only. Reconstitute the powder with sterile water for injection or other compatible diluents as directed by a healthcare professional. Administer slowly via IV infusion over 20-30 minutes, or as a deep IM injection.
Mechanism of Action
Ceftazidime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located in the bacterial cell wall, thereby disrupting the formation of the cell wall and leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, within minutes after IV administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
Approximately 1.7 to 2 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after intramuscular (IM) administration; high bioavailability intravenously (IV).
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ceftazidime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation
- Previous severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins, carbapenems)
Drug Interactions
Loop diuretics
May increase ceftazidime concentrations.
Aminoglycosides
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.
Chloramphenicol
May be antagonistic.
Oral anticoagulants
Increased INR/bleeding risk.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted solution stable for specific hours/days at room temp/refrigerated.
Overdose
Symptoms may include seizures, encephalopathy, asterixis. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can aid in removal.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised during lactation.
