Description
Overview of the medicine
D-cort-01 Eye Drop contains Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and swelling in the eye caused by various conditions such as allergies, irritation, or post-surgical recovery.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 drops instilled into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) 3-4 times daily, or as directed by a physician. The frequency may be tapered as symptoms improve.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is usually required for elderly patients, but use with caution due to potential for increased intraocular pressure.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for topical ophthalmic use.
How to Take
Wash hands thoroughly before use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch, and instill the prescribed number of drops without touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface. Close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic adrenocortical steroid that suppresses inflammation by inhibiting phospholipase A2, thereby reducing the formation of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. It also reduces capillary permeability and stabilizes lysosomal membranes, preventing the release of inflammatory mediators.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anti-inflammatory effects typically begin within a few hours of administration.
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys, primarily as inactive metabolites.
Half life
The systemic half-life of dexamethasone is approximately 3-4.5 hours.
Absorption
Topical ocular administration results in local action; some systemic absorption may occur, but it is generally minimal with proper dosing.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Acute untreated purulent ocular infections
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures
- Viral infections of the cornea and conjunctiva, especially Herpes Simplex Keratitis
- Mycobacterial infections of the eye
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication
Drug Interactions
Systemic corticosteroids
Concurrent use may increase the risk of systemic corticosteroid side effects, though absorption from ophthalmic drops is usually minimal.
NSAIDs (topical ophthalmic)
May increase the risk of corneal complications or delayed healing.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic administration. In case of accidental ingestion, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. No specific antidote is available.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a physician.
