Description
Overview of the medicine
Daflon 900 mg tablet is a venotonic and vasoprotective medication used for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and hemorrhoids. It helps to improve venous tone, reduce capillary permeability, and improve lymphatic drainage.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For Chronic Venous Insufficiency: 1 tablet daily, taken with meals. For Acute Hemorrhoidal Attacks: 3 tablets twice daily for 4 days, then 2 tablets twice daily for 3 days. For Chronic Hemorrhoids: 1 tablet daily, taken with meals.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required in elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in severe renal impairment. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Oral administration. Tablets should be taken with meals to improve tolerance.
Mechanism of Action
It increases venous tone by prolonging the vasoconstrictive effect of noradrenaline on the venous wall. It reduces capillary permeability and increases capillary resistance, thereby decreasing fluid exudation and edema. It also improves lymphatic drainage by increasing lymph flow and lymph vessel contractility.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptom relief for acute hemorrhoids can be seen within hours to a few days. For CVI, symptomatic improvement may take several weeks.
Excretion
Mainly through feces (major route), with a small amount excreted in urine (approximately 14% of the administered dose).
Half life
The elimination half-life of diosmetin (the active metabolite of diosmin) is approximately 11 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, extensively metabolized. Absorption is approximately 70% after oral administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to phenolic acids, which are then conjugated and excreted.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance (Micronized Purified Flavonoid Fraction) or any of the excipients.
Drug Interactions
Coumarin anticoagulants
There have been few reports of drug interactions, but Daflon may theoretically potentiate the effects of coumarin anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin). Close monitoring is recommended.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
There is limited experience with overdose of Daflon 900 mg. Generally, it is considered to have low toxicity. In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment and supportive measures should be employed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Studies in animals have not shown teratogenic effects. Clinical data on a large number of exposed pregnant women have not shown any adverse effects. However, use during pregnancy should be advised by a physician. Lactation: Excretion into breast milk is unknown. As a precautionary measure, it is preferable to avoid use during breastfeeding.
