Description
Overview of the medicine
Calcium Dobesilate is a vasoprotective agent used to treat microangiopathies, particularly diabetic retinopathy, and chronic venous insufficiency, including hemorrhoids. It helps in improving capillary resistance and reducing permeability.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg to 1000 mg daily, usually in 1-2 divided doses, depending on the severity of the condition. For hemorrhoids, 500 mg twice daily for a few weeks.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally required, but caution is advised in patients with compromised renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction may be necessary in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min).
How to Take
Orally, with or after meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
Mechanism of Action
Acts by reducing capillary permeability and improving microcirculation. It also inhibits platelet aggregation and improves blood viscosity, thereby reducing edema and improving venous tone.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects may be seen within a few days to weeks depending on the condition being treated.
Excretion
Primarily via urine (approx. 50%) and feces (approx. 50%) within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 5-6 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, bioavailability is around 60-80%. Peak plasma concentration is reached within 6 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; mainly excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Calcium Dobesilate or any component of the formulation.
- Severe gastrointestinal bleeding (relative contraindication).
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulants
Although no significant interactions are commonly reported, caution is advised with oral anticoagulants, and INR monitoring may be prudent.
None significant
Generally considered to have a low potential for drug interactions.
Storage
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Limited data suggest it is excreted in breast milk, so use with caution during lactation or discontinue breastfeeding.

Clinical Trials
Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Calcium Dobesilate in improving symptoms and microvascular parameters in diabetic retinopathy and chronic venous insufficiency.
Lab Monitoring
- Blood counts (especially if fever, sore throat, or other signs of infection occur, due to rare risk of agranulocytosis).
- Liver function tests (periodically if treatment is long-term, especially in patients with pre-existing liver disease).
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of patient adherence for optimal outcomes in chronic conditions like diabetic retinopathy.
- Advise patients to report any signs of infection (e.g., fever, sore throat) immediately due to the rare risk of agranulocytosis.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not stop taking Dobelit without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better.
- Report any unusual symptoms, especially fever, sore throat, or severe stomach upset, to your doctor immediately.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Generally, Dobelit does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or visual disturbances, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a healthy diet rich in fiber and fluids to manage venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids.
- Engage in regular physical activity to improve circulation.
- Avoid prolonged standing or sitting; elevate legs when resting if suffering from venous issues.
