Description
Overview of the medicine
Dobical Plus is a combination of Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3, used to supplement calcium and vitamin D in the body, which are essential for strong bones and teeth. It helps prevent and treat conditions like osteoporosis, rickets, and osteomalacia.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and dose adjustment may be necessary. Monitor calcium and phosphate levels.
How to Take
Orally, preferably with meals to enhance absorption. Can be taken with water.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Carbonate provides elemental calcium necessary for bone formation, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and blood coagulation. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus from the gut and regulates calcium levels in the blood, facilitating bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, with effects seen over weeks to months with consistent use.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via kidneys and feces; Vitamin D3 metabolites are excreted mainly in bile and feces, and some in urine.
Half life
Calcium has a complex pharmacokinetic profile; Vitamin D3 has a half-life of about 15-30 days.
Absorption
Calcium absorption depends on the presence of Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is absorbed from the small intestine.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized; Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), the active form.
