Overview of the medicine
Drometa contains Drotaverine Hydrochloride, an antispasmodic agent used to relieve pain and spasm of smooth muscles found in various organs like the gastrointestinal, biliary, and urogenital tracts.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
40-80 mg, 2-3 times daily, or as directed by physician. Maximum daily dose 240 mg.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment usually required, but caution is advised in elderly patients with liver or kidney impairment.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment needed for mild to moderate impairment, but contraindicated in severe renal insufficiency.
How to Take
Oral, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Drotaverine inhibits phosphodiesterase IV (PDE4), leading to increased intracellular cAMP levels. This causes relaxation of smooth muscles by decreasing intracellular calcium levels.

Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine (about 50%) and feces (about 30%) as metabolites.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Drotaverine or any excipients.
- •Severe hepatic or renal insufficiency.
- •Severe heart failure (low cardiac output syndrome).
- •Children under 6 years of age (for tablet form).
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
May reduce the antiparkinsonian effect of Levodopa, increasing tremor and rigidity.
Antihypertensive agents
Concurrent use may increase the hypotensive effect, especially with concomitant use of alcohol.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose may cause cardiac arrhythmias and collapse. Symptomatic treatment and supportive care are recommended. Gastric lavage may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks, after consulting a doctor. Avoid during lactation as it is unknown if it is excreted in breast milk.
