Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefadroxil is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in children, including respiratory tract, skin, soft tissue, and urinary tract infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
This pediatric drop formulation is not indicated for adult use. Adult dosage of Cefadroxil typically ranges from 500 mg to 1 g, once or twice daily, depending on the infection.
Elderly
This pediatric drop formulation is not indicated for elderly use. Elderly patients may require dosage adjustment based on renal function if using adult Cefadroxil formulations.
Renal_impairment
For pediatric patients with renal impairment, dosage must be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. For adults with renal impairment, Cefadroxil dosage should be reduced based on GFR/CrCl.
How to Take
Administer orally. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring device (dropper or spoon) for accurate dosing. Can be taken with or without food; taking with food may help reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Cefadroxil works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid
Excretion
Excreted primarily by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1 to 2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefadroxil or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Decreases renal excretion of cefadroxil, leading to increased and prolonged plasma concentrations.
Aminoglycosides, Loop Diuretics
Concurrent use with high doses may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect; monitor INR/PT.
Storage
Store dry powder at room temperature, below 30°C, away from moisture and direct light. After reconstitution, store the suspension in the refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze. Discard any unused portion after the specified period.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. In rare cases, central nervous system hyperexcitability may occur. Management is supportive, including gastric lavage or induced emesis, and careful monitoring of vital signs. Hemodialysis may be useful in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefadroxil has not been shown to be teratogenic in animal studies. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in low concentrations in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.

Lab Monitoring
- Routine monitoring is generally not required for short-term use.
- Monitor renal function in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or during prolonged therapy with high doses.
- Complete blood count (CBC) may be monitored during prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of completing the full prescribed course to prevent resistance and ensure eradication of infection.
- Advise parents to accurately measure the dose using the provided dropper/spoon.
- Be aware of potential cross-reactivity in patients with severe penicillin allergy.
- Monitor for signs of C. difficile-associated diarrhea, especially with prolonged use.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by the doctor, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
- Shake the bottle well before each use and use the provided measuring device (dropper or spoon) for accurate dosing.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects, or signs of allergic reactions, to your doctor immediately.
- Do not save leftover medicine for future infections.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Generally, cefadroxil does not impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if side effects like dizziness, confusion, or severe allergic reactions occur, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent the spread of infection.
- Ensure adequate fluid intake, especially if experiencing diarrhea.
- Avoid self-medication with antibiotics.
