Description
Overview of the medicine
Duvent 10 mg Tablet contains Bilastine, a non-sedating second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (sneezing, itchy nose, watery eyes) and urticaria (hives and skin rash). This strength is typically indicated for children aged 6 to 11 years.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The standard adult dose for Bilastine is 20 mg once daily. Duvent 10 mg is typically not indicated for adults; for adult use, consult for 20 mg strength.
Elderly
No dose adjustment is required in elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is required for mild to moderate renal impairment. For severe renal impairment, consult a physician.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with water, preferably one hour before or two hours after food. Do not take with grapefruit juice or other fruit juices.
Mechanism of Action
Bilastine acts as a selective peripheral histamine H1 receptor antagonist. It prevents histamine from binding to H1 receptors, thereby inhibiting the symptoms caused by histamine release during allergic reactions. It has no significant anticholinergic activity and does not cross the blood-brain barrier significantly, contributing to its non-sedating profile.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Approximately 95% of the dose is excreted unchanged, with about 67% eliminated via feces and 33% via urine.
Half life
Elimination half-life ranges from 8 to 12 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Oral bioavailability is approximately 60%. Absorption is reduced significantly by food and grapefruit juice.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized by the liver. It does not induce or inhibit cytochrome P450 isoenzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Bilastine or any of the excipients.

Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. There is no specific antidote for Bilastine. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if appropriate.
