Description
Overview of the medicine
Duvent 5 mg Oral Solution contains Levosalbutamol, a bronchodilator used to relieve symptoms of asthma and COPD, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. It works by relaxing the muscles of the airways to improve breathing.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
5 mg (5 mL) three times daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Lower doses may be considered; adjust based on patient response and tolerability.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required, but use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Measure the dose carefully using the provided measuring device.
Mechanism of Action
Levosalbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the lungs, leading to relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, which results in bronchodilation. This helps to open the airways and improve airflow.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bronchodilatory effect usually starts within 15-30 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in urine as the unchanged drug and its sulfate conjugate.
Half life
Approximately 3.3 to 4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 0.5-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver primarily by sulfation to an inactive phenolic sulfate. R-enantiomer (levosalbutamol) is cleared more slowly than S-enantiomer.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levosalbutamol or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with certain cardiovascular conditions (e.g., severe heart disease, arrhythmias).
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May lead to hypokalemia, especially with high doses of beta-agonists.
Beta-blockers
May block the bronchodilatory effect of levosalbutamol and can cause severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients. Concomitant use is generally contraindicated.
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
May potentiate the cardiovascular effects of levosalbutamol. Use with extreme caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms may include tachycardia, palpitations, tremor, headache, and nervousness. Treatment involves symptomatic and supportive measures. Cardiology monitoring may be required.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Exercise caution when administering to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.
