Description
Overview of the medicine
e-flu-125-mg-suspension is an antiviral medication containing Oseltamivir, used to treat and prevent influenza (flu) caused by the influenza A and B viruses. It works by preventing the flu virus from spreading inside the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Treatment: 75 mg (3 mL of 25 mg/mL suspension) twice daily for 5 days. Prevention: 75 mg (3 mL of 25 mg/mL suspension) once daily for 10 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Children
Dosage based on weight for treatment (5 days): ≤15 kg: 30 mg (1.2 mL) twice daily; >15-23 kg: 45 mg (1.8 mL) twice daily; >23-40 kg: 60 mg (2.4 mL) twice daily; >40 kg: 75 mg (3 mL) twice daily.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is required for patients with creatinine clearance <30 mL/min (e.g., 30 mg once daily for treatment).
How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food. Taking with food may improve tolerability and help reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Shake the suspension well before each use and measure dose accurately.
Mechanism of Action
Oseltamivir is an antiviral drug that acts as a neuraminidase inhibitor. It selectively inhibits the viral neuraminidase enzyme, which is crucial for the release of new viral particles from infected cells and for the spread of the virus within the respiratory tract.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement typically seen within 1-2 days of treatment initiation.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys as oseltamivir carboxylate.
Half life
Oseltamivir: 1-3 hours; Oseltamivir carboxylate: 6-10 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract and extensively converted to the active metabolite, oseltamivir carboxylate, by hepatic esterases. Bioavailability of the active metabolite is about 80%.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by esterases to its active form, oseltamivir carboxylate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to oseltamivir or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase oseltamivir carboxylate exposure due to competition for renal tubular secretion.
Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV)
Avoid administering oseltamivir for 2 days before and 14 days after LAIV due to potential interference with vaccine efficacy.
Storage
Store the unopened bottle at room temperature (20-25°C), away from direct light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted suspension can be stored at room temperature or refrigerated.
Overdose
Information on overdose is limited. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts are excreted in human milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.

YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials have demonstrated Oseltamivir's efficacy in reducing the duration and severity of influenza symptoms when started early, and in preventing influenza post-exposure and during seasonal outbreaks.
Lab Monitoring
- No routine lab monitoring required for patients with normal renal function.
- Monitor renal function (creatinine clearance) in patients with kidney impairment.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of timely initiation of treatment (within 48 hours of symptom onset) for optimal efficacy.
- Counsel patients/caregivers on potential neuropsychiatric events and advise immediate reporting of any unusual behavior, especially in pediatric and adolescent patients.
- Adjust dosage for patients with impaired renal function according to guidelines.
- Oseltamivir is not a substitute for influenza vaccination.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the full prescribed course of medication, even if you start to feel better.
- Start treatment as soon as possible after flu symptoms appear (within 48 hours for treatment).
- Shake the suspension well before each use and measure dose accurately with the provided measuring device.
- Report any unusual behavior or psychiatric symptoms to your doctor immediately.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time (within 2 hours) for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
May cause dizziness or lightheadedness in some patients. Advise caution when driving or operating machinery until individual response to the medication is known.
Lifestyle Advice
- Practice good hand hygiene (frequent hand washing) to prevent the spread of germs.
- Avoid close contact with sick people to reduce risk of infection.
- Consider getting an annual flu vaccine as a primary method of prevention.
