Description
Overview of the medicine
e-hexin 4 mg Syrup is a mucolytic agent used to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. It helps in relieving productive cough associated with various respiratory conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
8 mg (10 mL) three times daily. May be increased to 16 mg (20 mL) three times daily in severe cases, under medical supervision.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required unless severe hepatic or renal impairment is present. Consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dose may be necessary. Adjust dosage based on creatinine clearance and consult a physician.
How to Take
Oral administration. May be taken with or without food. Use a calibrated measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosage. Do not exceed recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
The active ingredient (e.g., Bromhexine) works by increasing the production of serous mucus in the respiratory tract and making the sputum less viscous, thereby facilitating expectoration.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via the kidneys, mainly as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours for active metabolite.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to various hydroxylated metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient (e.g., Bromhexine) or any component of the formulation
- •Active peptic ulcer disease due to potential gastric irritation
- •Children under 2 years of age (due to risk of mucociliary clearance impairment in this age group)
Drug Interactions
Cough suppressants (e.g., codeine, dextromethorphan)
Should not be used concomitantly as they may hinder the expectoration of loosened mucus, leading to mucus retention and potential respiratory complications.
Antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, erythromycin, oxytetracycline)
May increase concentration of antibiotics in bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, epigastric pain, and dizziness. Management is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered in severe cases shortly after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, only if clearly needed and benefits outweigh risks. Consult a physician. Small amounts may pass into breast milk; consider risks versus benefits during lactation.
