Description
Overview of the medicine
Ebazam (Ebastine) is a second-generation, non-sedating H1 antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial) and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily. In more severe cases, the dose can be increased to 20 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dose adjustment is generally required.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is generally required for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Ebazam can be taken with or without food. Orally disintegrating tablets should be placed on the tongue where they will rapidly dissolve and should be swallowed without water.
Mechanism of Action
Ebastine acts as a selective peripheral H1 receptor antagonist, blocking the effects of histamine and thereby reducing allergic symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itching, and hives.

Onset
Onset of action within 1-3 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites.
Half life
The active metabolite, carebastine, has a plasma half-life of 15-19 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration and extensively metabolized to its active metabolite carebastine.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via CYP3A4 to carebastine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ebastine or any component of the formulation.
- •Severe hepatic impairment (caution advised).
Drug Interactions
Grapefruit Juice
May increase plasma levels of ebastine.
Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, Clarithromycin
Increased plasma levels of ebastine and carebastine due to CYP3A4 inhibition, potentially leading to QT prolongation. Avoid co-administration.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In cases of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be administered. No specific antidote is known. Consult a healthcare professional immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use in pregnant women only if clearly needed. Avoid use during lactation as ebastine is excreted in breast milk.
