Description
Overview of the medicine
Eczacort-01-Cream contains Clobetasol Propionate, a potent topical corticosteroid used to treat severe inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin areas once or twice daily. Treatment should not exceed 2 weeks. Total dosage should not exceed 50g per week.
Elderly
Use with caution. Start with lower frequency, and monitor closely for side effects, especially skin atrophy and systemic absorption.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for topical application. Monitor for systemic effects if absorption is significant.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and rub in gently. Wash hands before and after application. Do not use on face, groin, or axillae unless directed by a physician.
Mechanism of Action
Clobetasol Propionate is a highly potent corticosteroid that works by activating natural substances in the skin to reduce swelling, redness, and itching. It inhibits inflammatory mediators.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief of symptoms within a few days of application.
Excretion
Excreted primarily by the kidneys, with some biliary excretion.
Half life
Variable, but generally short in the skin; systemic half-life around 4 hours for absorbed portions.
Absorption
Systemic absorption varies with vehicle, integrity of epidermal barrier, and use of occlusive dressings. Enhanced on thin skin areas or with inflammation.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Clobetasol Propionate or any excipients
- Rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis
- Pruritus without inflammation
- Untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella)
- Children under 12 years of age (due to high potency and risk of systemic effects)
Drug Interactions
CYP3A4 inhibitors
Co-administration with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, itraconazole) may increase systemic exposure of corticosteroids, leading to increased risk of systemic side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to produce acute systemic effects. Chronic overdose or misuse can lead to Cushing's syndrome, HPA axis suppression, skin thinning, and other local/systemic corticosteroid side effects. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is advised.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Consult a doctor. Use with caution during lactation; advise mothers not to apply to breast area to avoid ingestion by the infant.

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Clobetasol Propionate has been extensively studied in numerous clinical trials and is widely accepted as an effective treatment for severe inflammatory dermatoses. Studies demonstrate its efficacy in reducing inflammation, erythema, and pruritus.
Lab Monitoring
- Monitor for signs of HPA axis suppression (e.g., plasma cortisol levels) with prolonged or extensive use, especially in children.
- Periodic ophthalmic exams if applied near eyes or for prolonged periods.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize short-term use (typically ≤2 weeks) and avoiding application to the face, intertriginous areas, and large body surface areas to minimize local and systemic side effects.
- Educate patients on proper application technique, the importance of not exceeding the prescribed duration/amount, and signs of potential side effects.
- Consider stepping down to a less potent corticosteroid or non-steroidal agent once acute inflammation is controlled.
Patient Guidelines
- Apply only a thin layer as directed by a doctor, typically once or twice daily.
- Do not use for longer than the prescribed duration (usually 2 weeks) or on larger areas than advised.
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Rinse thoroughly if contact occurs.
- Do not use occlusive dressings or bandages over the treated area unless specifically advised by a doctor.
- Inform your doctor if your condition worsens or does not improve within the prescribed treatment period.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra to make up for a missed dose.
Driving Precautions
Eczacort-01-Cream is for topical use and is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Keep the affected skin clean and moisturized, using emollients as needed.
- Avoid triggers that exacerbate your skin condition, such as harsh soaps, irritants, or allergens.
