Description
Overview of the medicine
Eczacort 0.1% Ointment is a corticosteroid medication used for the relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, such as eczema and psoriasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film of Eczacort 0.1% Ointment to the affected skin areas once daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustments required; use with caution due to thinner skin.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustments required for topical use.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a small amount to the affected area and rub in gently. Wash hands after application. Do not apply to eyes, mouth, or internal surfaces.
Mechanism of Action
Mometasone furoate is a synthetic corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. It inhibits phospholipase A2, leading to decreased synthesis of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within a few days of consistent application.
Excretion
Excreted via urine and feces as metabolites.
Half life
Not well established for topical application; systemically absorbed drug is rapidly cleared.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical application, especially when applied to intact skin. Absorption may increase with occlusion or extensive use.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mometasone furoate or any components of the preparation
- Bacterial, fungal, viral, or parasitic skin infections
- Perioral dermatitis, rosacea, acne vulgaris
- Skin atrophy, ulcers, wounds
Drug Interactions
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, co-administration may increase immunosuppression.
Systemic Corticosteroids
May increase systemic corticosteroid effects with extensive use or occlusion.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely with topical application. Prolonged or excessive use may lead to Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia, or adrenal suppression. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as systemic absorption may occur. Use with caution during lactation; avoid application to the breast area.
