Description
Overview of the medicine
Edicef 125 mg Suspension contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including those of the ear, throat, lungs, and urinary tract.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically not for adults for 125mg suspension; adults generally require higher strength tablets. For general Cefixime, 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed based on age alone, but renal function should be assessed.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min). Consult physician.
How to Take
Edicef 125 mg Suspension is for oral administration. It can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in urine via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Some excretion in bile.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed, influenced by food.
Metabolism
Limited metabolism; about 50% is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (e.g., anaphylaxis) due to potential cross-reactivity.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma concentrations by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
May increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations when co-administered. Monitoring of carbamazepine levels may be necessary.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (PT) and international normalized ratio (INR), leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Close monitoring is required.
Storage
Store the unreconstituted powder below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Store the reconstituted suspension in the refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after the expiry period.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. There is no specific antidote. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis does not remove Cefixime from the body in significant quantities.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Animal reproduction studies have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution is advised during breastfeeding.
