Description
Overview of the medicine
Edicef 250 mg Capsule contains Cefadroxil, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic effective against various bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract, skin, soft tissue, and urinary tract.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
General dosage is 1-2 grams daily, given as a single dose or two divided doses. For 250 mg capsules, this often translates to 2-4 capsules (500mg - 1g) twice daily depending on the severity and type of infection.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary for elderly patients with impaired renal function. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Initial dose is a loading dose, followed by maintenance doses adjusted based on creatinine clearance (e.g., reduced dose or extended dosing interval).
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Can be taken with food if stomach upset occurs. Take with a full glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Cefadroxil is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour after oral administration.
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys, primarily by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion, into the urine.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Food does not significantly affect absorption.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefadroxil or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase cefadroxil plasma concentrations and prolong its half-life by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use with other nephrotoxic drugs like aminoglycosides should be approached with caution due to potential increased risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants
Cefadroxil may enhance the anticoagulant effect of vitamin K antagonists (e.g., warfarin) in some cases.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and possibly neuromuscular hyperexcitability or convulsions at very high doses. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use only if clearly needed. Cefadroxil is excreted in low concentrations in breast milk; caution is advised when administered to a nursing mother.
