Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefadroxil is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including those of the urinary tract, skin and skin structure, and pharynx/tonsils.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg to 1 g orally, once or twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. For most infections, 1 g once daily or 500 mg twice daily is common.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Initial dose 1 g, followed by 500 mg at intervals determined by creatinine clearance (e.g., CrCl 25-50 mL/min: 500 mg every 12 hr; CrCl 10-25 mL/min: 500 mg every 24 hr; CrCl <10 mL/min: 500 mg every 36 hr).
How to Take
Elocef capsules should be taken orally, with or without food. Taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.
Mechanism of Action
Cefadroxil works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion (approximately 90% within 24 hours).
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally (over 90%), even in the presence of food. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefadroxil, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- History of serious hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin (cross-allergenicity).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring INR monitoring.
Probenecid
May decrease renal excretion of cefadroxil, leading to increased and prolonged serum levels.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, and diarrhea. Management is primarily supportive and symptomatic. Hemodialysis may be useful in reducing serum cefadroxil levels in cases of severe overdose or renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use with caution. Cefadroxil is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.

Clinical Trials
Cefadroxil has undergone extensive clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety for indicated bacterial infections since its introduction.
Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (e.g., creatinine clearance) in patients with impaired renal function or on prolonged therapy.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) during prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Confirm bacterial infection before prescribing.
- Adjust dose in renal impairment.
- Advise patients to complete the full course to prevent resistance.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not share your medicine with others.
- Inform your doctor about any allergic reactions or severe side effects.
