Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose is 7 mg once daily (if starting from 0 mg). For Emfogen-M-XR 5 mg, it might be used as part of a titration schedule or maintenance dose depending on patient tolerance and previous treatment. Typical maintenance is 14-28 mg once daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but close monitoring is recommended.
Renal_impairment
Moderate renal impairment (CrCl 30-49 mL/min): maximum recommended dose is 14 mg once daily. Severe renal impairment (CrCl 5-29 mL/min): maximum recommended dose is 7 mg once daily.
How to Take
Take orally once daily with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or divide.
Mechanism of Action
Memantine is an NMDA receptor antagonist that binds to the NMDA receptor-operated cation channels. It blocks the effects of abnormal glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter that may contribute to the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
