Description
Overview of the medicine
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat acid-related disorders of the stomach and esophagus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 20-40 mg once daily, 30-60 minutes before food. Duration depends on condition.

How to Take
Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew, crush, or break it. Take at least 30-60 minutes before a meal.
Mechanism of Action
Esomeprazole inhibits the gastric H+/K+-ATPase (proton pump) in the parietal cells of the stomach, thereby blocking the final step of acid secretion.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via the urine (approx. 80%) and feces (approx. 20%).
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Bioavailability increases with repeated dosing.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP2C19 and CYP3A4).

- Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole or any other benzimidazole substituted proton pump inhibitors.
- Patients with severe liver impairment may require dose adjustment.
Drug Interactions
