Overview of the medicine
Etoben 120 mg Tablet contains Etodolac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It can also be used for acute pain management.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For Etoben 120 mg, typically 1-2 tablets once or twice daily, or as directed by physician. The maximum daily dose for Etodolac is 1200 mg. Doses should be individualized.
Elderly
Lower doses may be required due to potential renal and hepatic impairment. Close monitoring is recommended.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment. Avoid in severe renal failure.
How to Take
Take Etoben 120 mg Tablet orally, preferably with food or milk to reduce gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Etodolac inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins. By reducing prostaglandin production, it decreases inflammation, pain, and fever.

Onset
Analgesic effects can be observed within 30 minutes to 1 hour after administration.
Excretion
Approximately 75% is excreted in the urine as metabolites, and about 15% is excreted in feces.
Half life
The plasma elimination half-life is approximately 6-7 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Bioavailability is approximately 100%. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1 to 2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver primarily via hydroxylation and subsequent glucuronidation. Cytochrome P450 enzymes are involved.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Etodolac or other NSAIDs
- •Patients with active peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding
- •History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- •Severe renal or hepatic impairment
- •Third trimester of pregnancy
- •Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery (peri-operative pain)
Drug Interactions
Lithium
May increase plasma lithium levels, leading to toxicity.
SSRIs/SNRIs
Increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Methotrexate
May increase plasma methotrexate levels and toxicity.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding.
Diuretics and ACE inhibitors
May reduce the antihypertensive effect and increase the risk of renal impairment.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
Increased risk of bleeding.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment. There is no specific antidote for Etodolac overdose. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered if ingested recently.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C in early pregnancy, D in the third trimester. Avoid use in the third trimester due to potential premature closure of the ductus arteriosus. Use with caution during lactation; consult a doctor.
